English baritone, William Dazeley was born in Rugby and is a graduate of Jesus College, Cambridge. He studied singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, where he won several prizes including the prestigious Gold Medal. He also won the 1989 Decca Kathleen Ferrier Prize, the 1991 Richard Tauber Prize and the 1991 Walther Gruner International Lieder Competition.
William Dazeley’s international career as led him to prestigious international opera houses such as the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, English National Opera, Glyndebourne Festival, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Staatsoper Berlin, Salzburger Festspiele, La Monnaie, Théâtre du Châtelet, Aix-en-Provence Festival, San Francisco Opera, Welsh National Opera and Opera North. His most recent engagements include Alonso in the world première of Anthony Bolton’s Island of Dreams for Grange Park Opera, Fleville in Andrea Chénier at the Royal Opera House, Mr Gedge in Albert Herring for Opera North, Johann in Werther for Baden Baden Festival, Musiklehrer in Ariadne auf Naxos and Krušina in The Bartered Bride for Garsington Opera, The Forester in Sivan Eldar’s Like Flesh for Opéra de Lille, Opéra de Montpellier and Opéra National de Lorraine, Elviro in Serse with The English Concert in New York and London, Musiklehrer (Ariadne auf Naxos) for Opéra de Montpellier, Lalchand in The Firework Maker’s Daughter at The Minack Theatre, Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte for Royal Danish Opera. He can also be seen in GPO films on YouTube as Mr Coyle in Owen Wingrave and the title rôle in Gianni Schicchi.
Concerts have included appearances at the BBC Proms, Royal Festival Hall, Bridgewater Hall, Wigmore Hall, Purcell Room, Cadogan Hall, Mozarteum Salzburg and Aspen Festival and he has worked with orchestras and ensembles such as Berlin Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Monteverdi Choir, London Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonia. William occasionally likes to wrestle with the Guardian crossword whilst being attacked by the family cat and has developed a strange liking for cold showers.
