Described as ‘a performer with a strong vocal personality and stage presence’ (Opera Magazine), Georgia Mae Bishop is a mezzo-soprano originally from Jersey and currently based in the UK. She is delighted to be returning to perform Magdalene in Die Meistersinger with Saffron Opera Group after performing Annina in Der Rosenkavalier last year.

She was the winner of the inaugural Mastersingers Wagner Competition and won second prize at the Wagner Society Singing Competition, London, as well as being a quarter-finalist in the Elizabeth Connell Competition and an Emerging Artist on Dolora Zajick’s Institute of Young Dramatic Voices. 

Highlights of recent seasons include Pisana in Verdi’s I due foscari with Chelsea Opera Group at Cadogan Hall, her debut with the BBC Symphony Orchestra singing the Alto solo in the UK première of George Walker’s Mass at the BarbicanSorceress in Dido and Aeneas at the Ustinov Studio, the title role in Carmen for Into Opera, Giovanna in Rigoletto and Ulrica in Un ballo in maschera for Opera Holland Park and Flosshilde in Birmingham Opera Company’s award winning production of Das Rheingold. 

Georgia has covered numerous rôles at English National Opera including Queen in Iolanthe, Forester’s Wife/Owl in The Cunning Little Vixen and Erda in Das Rheingold. She was an Alvarez Young Artist for three seasons at Garsington Opera, performing Alto Shepherd and covering Messenger/Proserpina in Monteverdi’s Orfeo, and covering Mistress Quickly in Falstaff. Georgia studied on the Opera Course at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama after initial studies at Trinity Laban. During her time at Guildhall her rôles included Zita in Gianni Schicchi, Madame de Croissy in Dialogues des Carmélites and Vera Boronel in The Consul.

During lockdown Georgia commissioned, curated and later led the Jèrriais Song Project, premièring Chansons d’Jèrri the first song cycle in Jersey’s native language Jèrriais and also leading language and music workshops in primary schools across the Island in collaboration with ArtHouse Jersey.
