Tasmanian born Simon Thorpe studied at the Guildhall School of Music and the National Opera Studio under Robert Dean.
He has sung at the Sydney Opera House, The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and in France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore and Spain. He also works at English National Opera, Welsh National Opera, Opera North and Scottish Opera and many other quality, smaller opera companies. As a Heldenbaritone his operatic repertoire includes Puccini: Scarpia (Tosca), Michele (Il tabarro) and Jack Rance (La fanciula del West), Verdi: the title roles in, Rigoletto and Falstaff, Anckarström (Un ballo in maschera) and Wagner: Wotan (Die Walküre), The Dutchman (Die fliegende Höllander) and Telramund (Lohengrin).
Recordings include Second Mate/Arthur Jones (Billy Budd) with Kent Nagano on Erato, an Opera Rara CD playing the role of Duclou in Leoncavallo’s Zazá and the baritone solo in Thomas Hewitt-Jones’s Regards from Rochester.
He sings regularly in concert at major venues including the Barbican‚ Queen Elizabeth Hall‚ Royal Albert Hall and Bridgewater Hall. Particular highlights have included Carmina Burana with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Fauré Requiem with the Choir of King’s College‚ Cambridge‚ conducted by Nicholas Cleobury‚ Messiah with the Armonico Consort‚ Elijah at St David’s Hall‚ Cardiff and the Mozart Requiem with the Hallé Orchestra conducted by Stanislaw Skrowacewski.
Current and future plans include the Major Domo (Andrea Chénier) for the Royal Opera, the title role in Falstaff for West Green House Opera and Der Wanderer in Siegfried for The London Opera Company.
