Philip Clieve is a British Tenor from Southport, Lancashire. He completed his masters at the Royal National College of Music and is a graduate of the prestigious National Opera Studio. He was also a Young Artist at Longborough Festival Opera.
Philip has performed with many of the country’s leading opera companies, including Opera North, English National Opera, Glyndebourne, Welsh National Opera, Grange Park Opera, Longborough Festival Opera and Buxton Opera, he returns to English National Opera for the 2024/25 season.
2023 was a year of firsts for Philip: His first Cavaradossi (Tosca) with Opera Loki in France, his first Don Jose (Carmen) for Longborough Festival Opera, his first title role in Hugh the Drover for the London Opera Group and his first Ferrando (Così fan tutte) for Regents Opera. He was also a finalist in the Mastersingers’ Carole Rees prize, for promising Wagnerian singers.
In 2024, Philip made his solo debut at Grange Park Opera, singing Antonio in Anthony Bolton’s Land of Dreams. He also sang Don Curzio for Saffron Opera Group’s Le Nozze di Figaro, toured the south west as Don Jose with Rogue Opera’s Carmen and débuted with Grim’s Dyke Opera as Nankipoo in The Mikado.
Philip is equally at home on the concert platform and has an extensive repertoire of Oratorio performances under his belt, most recently: Ethel Smythe’s Mass in D for Lytham, Blackpool and Preston choral society, Mozart’s Requiem for Hemel Choral Society, Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle for Congleton and Salford Choral Societies and Handel’s Messiah for Shrewsbury Cathedral.
