Andrew Mayor was born in Manchester and educated at Magdalen College School, Oxford, singing as a chorister and subsequently as a choral scholar at Magdalen College.  He studied singing at the Royal Academy of Music.

An early experience was as soloist in a performance of Messiah from Scratch at the Royal Albert Hall, conducted by Sir David Willcocks.  Another milestone was singing as bass soloist in Beethoven’s Choral Fantasia with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra and Maurizio Pollini conducted by Claudio Abbado in the Festspielhaus Salzburg.

Andrew has a busy operatic career, touring the USA as Danilo (Die lustige Witwe) and throughout Europe in the title rôle in Rigoletto for Compagnia d’Opera Italiana di Milano. Rôles in the UK include Renato (Un ballo in maschera) and Count Almaviva (Le Nozze di Figaro) at Holland Park, Ford (Falstaff) for English Touring Opera and the title rôle in Don Giovanni for Mid Wales Opera.  At the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden he sang Starveling in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream.  Last summer Andrew sang Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte) with performances in France and at St John’s Smith Square, London with the Southbank Sinfonia.  This summer he sang Sharpless (Madama Butterfly) with London City Philharmonic, also at St John’s Smith Square and Rodrigo (Don Carlo).

Future plans include Donner (Das Rheingold) and Gunther (Götterdämmerung) in performances of the full Ring Cycle for Regents Opera in London in 2025.

Andrew is a qualified solicitor and has a CELTA qualification to teach English as a foreign language.  He is also training to become a Feldenkrais practitioner and is a member of the British Association of Ski Instructors.
